    Dear Parents and Students,

This is our last full week of school and what a year it has been! We truly wish that we could end this school year with traditional in person activities and congratulations at completing 6th grade. Most of this letter is a repeat from last week, however, I wanted to bring to your attention two events:  PIcking Up Student Belongings and iPad collection. For picking up student belongings, please consider showing up at that time listed below as that will be an opportunity to say goodbye in person before the summer break. In regards to the iPad collection, please make sure your student saves their treasured work or activities in their Google Drive and that they delete all photos/videos from their school iPad. Don't forget the charging block and cord.

The last day of school is Wednesday, June 10, 2020.

    Dear Parents, April 17, 2020

We would like to begin with a big thanks to all the students and parents for checking in with us this week. It is a great joy from our end to hear from or see your children. This checking in and seeing our students complete assignments in a variety of ways gives us hope that we can continue learning and teaching with them. Please continue to check in with us and to have that wonderful patience as we learn how to become distance learning teachers.

    Power School Grading

Per directive from our superintendent, as March 19th, we are not allowed to grade work of any sort from students. That being said we can submit in Power School “collected” or “missing” entries. We will continue using this style of acknowledgement until we are told to start grading using letter Grades.

Furthermore, we are asking students to look in their Power School Trimester 3 to see if there are missing assignments prior to March 16th that they would like to complete and turn into us using their district email for a grade adjustment.

Hello Class, Please take a moment to say hello and check in with me. I hope all of you are doing okay. I miss all of you and I hope we can reconnect. Make sure to respond to this email so that I know that you are aware of what is going on.  Please see the attachments.
    Dear Students and Parents,

I hope this email finds your families healthy as we transition to distance learning.  I really miss your children and I am looking forward to trying out distance learning with them. You may receive more emails from me these next few days but I will try my best to be clear about my recommendations for math and history (my homeroom students). Currently, none of the work that has been suggested since March 16th will be graded per district directive, but I highly recommend keeping focused on sustaining math skills and concepts. I will let you know in advance when I will be allowed to grade again. These next two weeks are for teachers and students to get reacquainted utilizing distance learning.

My first request is to have all my math/ history students respond back to me with a quick hello in Microsoft Teams (I will not be using Zoom).
They should already have an email from me in their school email inbox. I want to make sure we are able to communicate via chat/video but, most importantly, I want to make sure I have made contact with your child.  In the case that I don't hear from your child I will be calling home Wednesday. Since the "stay at school" iPads are being distributed tomorrow I am hopeful that I will hear from all my students by Tuesday, April 14th by the end of the school day dismissal.  Helpful Tip: Students may have to go Manager App on their iPad and add the Microsoft Team app to their iPad. I tried it out on my son, a Cajon Park 7th grader and I had to download the app. I will try to push out the app this evening.

My second request is for students to go to their Google Classroom class they have with me and see the postings of what is recommended to them these next two weeks. Keeping with my routine, I will post in Google Classroom daily in math and weekly in history.  There are Google Form check ins that I would like students to submit daily for math and weekly for history. I think students will find the choices of different activities to be appealing in the math and history classrooms. All students are encouraged to get started right away and I look forward to their choice activities and responses.

I will have my online schedule posted in Microsoft Teams as well as in Google Classroom, my district webpage and this email. Also, there is a letter attached to this email regarding how to login into Microsoft Teams.
I plan to post my video block times by Wednesday, April 15th, I just need a bit more practice time.

    Dear 6th Grade Families,

We sincerely hope you and your families are well during this challenging time.  As a entire staff we met with Mr. Dobbins and we were given information that we would like to share. Frustrating as it may seem we don't have a definite answer to give to all of you regarding how April 13th will look.  However, the expectation is to have students return to school on April 13th. When the health order expires on March 31st, the superintendent is meeting with other officials to make a decision about how students will continue their education. Once we have more information to share about our return we will let you know as we are very eager to be with your children.
    We miss them.

    Message from our Superintendent:
"Our current reopening date is April 13th. However, the District is working closely with both County and State Health officials to determine when it will be appropriate to return. There will absolutely be more communication regarding our timelines before April 13th that will inform all parents and students of the plan moving forward!"
Please keep monitoring your emails and the district's webpage to have the most current information.

Please take a moment to fill out this form we would like to make sure we are communicating with all our 6th grade families. It might seem redundant however, sometimes there are errors in inputting information. Thank you.

Thank you so much for filling out this form; we want to make sure we are communicating with all 6th families.

    Dear Parents and Students,

I hope this email finds you healthy and well. I truly miss seeing all of my students and pray that they all are healthy and making the best of "life" as we hunker down in our homes. I am very hopeful that I will see my students April 13th. I would say that I have interacted via Google Classroom with at least 30 students. I will respond back to students so please encourage them to go to Google Classroom; I really want to stay connected. Thank you in advance.

Next week, focuses on doing Khan Academy lessons in 6th grade math course (Illustrative Mathematics)-Unit 2 Introducing Ratios. I will post daily voluntary assignments in Google Classroom that connect students to their accounts in Khan Academy.

In this unit, students learn to understand and use the terms “ratio,” “rate,” “equivalent ratios,” “per,” “at this rate,” “constant speed,” and “constant rate,” and to recognize when two ratios are or are not equivalent. They represent ratios as expressions, and represent equivalent ratios with double number line diagrams, tape diagrams, and tables. They use these ...

    February 1, 2020
    Hello Families and Friends,

Happy February, I wanted to let you know that I have been reminding students that Monday, February 3, 2020 is the last day to accept second trimester extra credit. It has been posted in Google Classroom since mid November. I give extra credit points to correct problems and to students who have turned in all their homework assignments. I have attached the extra credit to this email.

Students have been assigned since the beginning of trimester two to work on 6th grade mastery course in Khan Academy with 30% accomplished by February 19th. I am entering their effort score E2 in Power School.

In preparation for the CAASPP ICA state testing in May; students have a practice test in Google classroom with an answer key. I have attached the practice test to this email, too. We began the review before 6th grade camp and ended around number 20. We will continue reviewing these questions in the near future. We are scheduled to take the ICA practice/performance test February 12,13,18, 19.

Math Club is still available to all students we meet Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays after school until 3pm.  However, Math Club on Friday, February 7 and Tuesday, March 3 is cancelled.

If you have any questions please contact me, I answer to emails the fastest even on weekends.

Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,                     August 21, 2019

Welcome to Cajon Park! I am your sixth-grade math, advisory, social studies, and PE teacher. I am so excited to meet and get to work with you over the course of this year! I believe that when parents and teachers work together, children do better at school. Please check your child's planner and/or my teacher website nightly for a list of homework and class assignments. Students who do not acquire a parent's signature by Friday will receive a lower citizenship grade. Your child will write homework assignments in his/her planner.  If your child uses his/her time wisely he/she should average about one-half hour of homework per night. Please make sure to check the PowerSchool website/app regularly to ensure and encourage your child’s academic success and progress. My math grading policy is described in another letter.

We want a positive learning environment for your child thus, we are continuing our Falcon Proud Mantra (see below) that encapsulates behavior expectations set forth in the Step Discipline System.  This fits nicely with my philosophy of positive reinforcement and I am looking forward to implementing incentives to encourage PROUD behavior!

    Prepared

    Respectful

    Own your actions

    Unified

    Disciplined

I would like students to have the following supplies:

    • A 3-ring binder with divider tabs for Math (make sure it isn’t too big to fit in your backpack)
    • Two highlighter markers of different colors
    • Dry erase markers and eraser (a balled sock works well)
    • A steady supply of lined binder paper and graph paper (loose-leaf paper please, not spiral-bound notebooks)
    • A steady supply of pencils
    • A hand-held pencil sharpener
    • A set of crayons, colored pencils, or felt tip markers
    • A ruler with standard and metric units
    • A glue stick and scissors
    •

I will offer math tutoring after school; Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays until 3 p.m. Please take advantage of this time if you are struggling or just enjoy math. More information to follow in the next couple of weeks. A permission slip will need to be signed prior to attending.  This math club is not a social club. I do try to make it fun during the last 20 or 30 minutes with math activities and games.

I have many goals for this year. My first goal is to create a community where all students feel safe to take risks, make mistakes, and grow as human beings. My second goal is to connect content to real world examples and make connections to our own lives. My third goal is that we all come to class prepared, open-minded, and ready to learn. Overall, I want our classroom to be a place that we enjoy being in; we are going to have a lot of fun!

I look forward to meeting you on the first day of school, and to meeting parents/guardians on back to school night- August 27, 2019 at 5:45-6:45 p.m.

    Sincerely,

    Ms. Carroll
