• Dear Carlton Oaks Families,

I am so excited to be starting my second year with the Carlton Oaks team as your Vice Principal! I am truly honored to continue in this role and look forward to working with Mr. Andy Johnston in serving and leading the Carlton Oaks community.
You will notice some amazing changes on our campus as we return this year! We are working on building our community through work in our gardens. We are working on our reading, butterfly, rose, Native Kumeyaay, and edible gardens all around our campus. There will be many opportunities for students and parents to come together this year to work, enjoy, and share in our gardening experiences!
With the new paint on the school, we will also have multiple artist murals around campus that are all aligned to the grade level artist units of study and our COCOAs. (Carlton Oaks Coalition Of Arts) Our teachers have worked together to develop a comprehensive and engaging arts curriculum and this has been adopted as a school-wide focus by all teachers.
A little bit about me...Personally, I grew up in San Diego county and have recently moved to Poway after living in El Cajon for the past 30 years raising my three sons, Jason, Matt and Codi. We were a competitive swim family, but now all of my boys have retired and moved into their careers. My oldest is a photographer, sociologist and lifelong student, my middle son was a force recon marine and is currently pursuing his nursing degree and my youngest son graduated from Columbia University and is a chemical engineer working in NY City, and has recently returned to school to pursue a degree in dentistry. My boys taught me that every child is uniquely different and I greatly appreciate the role that family plays in supporting each student to reach their potential.
I have been in education for 29 years teaching kindergarten through 5th grades and most recently out of the classroom coaching teachers. I started my formal education earning my Bachelor of Music from UC Irvine and made the transition into education in graduate school. I earned my Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership at SDSU and have been a teacher leader in many capacities throughout my career. I have sat on a State Board of Education Instructional Materials Adoption Panel, worked as a science staff developer and lead teacher for science at the District, County and State levels, and worked as a new teacher coach supporting teachers as they began their careers in education.
Feel free to stop in and say hello, as my door is always open. If there is anything I can assist you with, please let me know.

    See you soon!

    Leah Saunders
