September has quickly come and gone. October is a full month of learning and fun. Our Character Education word of the month is: RESPONSIBILITY. Thank you for your support.IMPORTANT DATES:TODAY = First Trimester Progress Reports come home - please sign and return the pink page only. Thanks.Friday Oct. 6th = Scholastic Book Order Due (attached) - Please look on classroom website for online Classroom Code to pay by credit card. You can also pay by check to Scholastic. Thank you to those who ordered last month.NEW HOMEWORK BOOK BAGS: Your child has been bringing home a DAILY BOOK BAG. This will have a school owned guided reading book in it that your child has practiced during reading groups with me. It is expected that you listen to your child read this book and you discuss the elements and plot of the story with your child every night and sign the log that is enclosed in the bag.Your child must bring the Book Bag to school DAILY. Your child may bring home the same book 2 or 3 nights in a row. This is okay!! Rereading books builds their fluency of reading! If the book gets lost, you will be charged a fee of $7.00 for the book since it belongs to a set. All first graders at Hill Creek are taking home nightly book bags. Please promote a love a reading at home.
Language Arts: We have begun exploring our new Language Arts adoption - WONDERS. We are completing Unit 1 and beginning Unit 2 this month. Students are being introduced to Oral Vocabulary, High Frequency Words, Spelling Words and many new stories with Close Reading Strategies every week. Some Highlights of Unit 1 are:
*Consonants b,c,f,g,h,m,n,p,r,s,t *Reader Finger on words when someone is reading.
*Short Vowel sounds a, i, o *Word Families: -at, -an, -it, -ig, -op
*Blending sounds into words:c a t = cat *Sequence of a story
* Blends with l, r, and s = clip, grass, stop
Spelling City.com is marked on as a Favorite on all of our iPads. Students should be able to access weekly spelling words with games and access to take a test. They use this app as a choice at Guided Reading time.
*Writing: Small Moment Stories - Sequence, Adding Details of What did you see? Hear? Feel?, A Good Ending
1. Capital at the beginning of a sentence and names
2. Punctuation at the end of a sentence
3. Fingerspace between each word
4. Letters formed and sitting on the lines correctly
5. Voice off – trying my best
Math: We have been exploring our Math Expressions program. We have completed Unit 1 - Partners and Number Patterns to 10 and are almost finished with Unit 2 - Addition and Subtraction Strategies. Please be working on flashcards at home - fast as a snap! Thank you for those who have been working on the homework worksheets at home. This gives you an idea of the lesson/concept we learned in the classroom.
Social Studies: We have completed Unit One about Citizenship. We will be studying Christopher Columbus and have begun Unit 2 – People and Places and maps.Halloween will not be celebrated in class.
