The Santee School District Board of Education met at 6 p.m. August 6, 2024. Meeting highlights included:
Discussion and/or Action Items
- The Board appointed Ashley Zaldivar as Coordinator of Expanded Learning Programs. Ms. Zaldivar is currently an Early Childhood Education Teacher for the Ramona Headstart Program. Prior to that, she was a fifth-grade teacher for Escondido Union School District, and a special education/after-school programs instructional aide for Vista Unified School District. Ms. Zaldivar holds a Master of Arts in Education, a Child Development Site Supervisor permit, and a multiple subject credential.
- On August 1, 2024, Member Ken Fox resigned from the Board of Education. Mr. Fox has dutifully served this district since 2010 and he will be greatly missed as a Board of Education member. The community is invited to the September 3 Board Meeting, in person or virtually, to celebrate his legacy and impact in the district.
The Governing Board voted to move forward with a provisional appointment process to fill the remainder of Mr. Fox’s term in Seat #5, which expires in 2026. An appointee must be approved by the Board and sworn in by September 30, 2024. Key next steps include:
- The Board will review the application timeline and process at the August 20 Board Meeting, and will publish the information for candidates once approved.
- The Board will interview candidates at a public meeting, accept oral or written public input, and select the provisional appointee by a majority vote.
- If a candidate cannot be appointed by September 30, the County Office of Education may call for a Special Election.
More information about the application timeline and process will be made available to the public after the August 20, 2024, Board of Education Meeting.
Board Policies and Bylaws
- The Board held a first reading for Board Policy (BP) 4354.1 – Early Retirement Health Benefits for Management/Confidential Employees. In September 2022, the Board approved an increase to the District’s health benefit contribution from $7,000 to $12,000 for employees who work 30-40 hours per week. Board Policy 4354.1 is being updated to reflect the increase of the annual cap to $12,000 ($1,000 per month).
