A Shared Commitment to Safe and Welcoming Schools
Providing a safe, secure, and welcoming learning environment is the top priority of our school district. School safety goes far beyond locks, cameras, or emergency drills—it is built through thoughtful planning, ongoing training, and strong partnerships with families, staff, and our community.
Strong Partnerships at the Local and National Level
Each year, the district works closely with local law enforcement agencies and the fire department to review campus safety practices and evaluate security measures across our schools. We also partner with national agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, to assess our campuses and identify opportunities to strengthen security. Over the past several years, these collaborations have guided significant investments in modern safety infrastructure, ensuring our students and staff are supported by reliable, up-to-date systems.
Investing in Modern Safety Infrastructure
Recent district investments include:
- An integrated security system with strategically placed cameras, industry-leading monitoring software, and a cloud-based video archiving system.
- An advanced alarm and speaker notification system that activates strobe lights, wall-mounted digital displays, desktop alerts, and intercoms to guide students, staff, and visitors during an emergency.
- A staff and visitor badge system that uses dynamic digital mapping, real-time locating capabilities, wearable panic buttons, and visitor management and reunification tools to support faster, more coordinated responses.
- Internal lock mechanisms installed in classrooms and throughout school campuses.
Learning and Growing with Safe and Sound Schools
This week, district and school leadership took another important step forward by hosting Safe and Sound Schools, a national nonprofit school safety advocacy and resource center known for its research-based approach to crisis prevention, response, and recovery. Together, we conducted campus walkthroughs, held in-depth discussions on safety protocols, and engaged in meaningful dialogue with community members, the Sheriff’s Department, and the Fire Department—rethinking school safety through a comprehensive, whole-child lens.
What’s Next: Review, Reflection, and Refinement
Over the next several months, the district will continue working closely with Safe and Sound Schools to take a deeper look at our current practices and review their recommendations. This spring, we will receive comprehensive reports for each school site, including site-specific findings and recommendations aligned to each pillar of the Safe and Sound Schools framework. These reports will guide reflection, refinement, and thoughtful planning as we continue strengthening our safety systems.
Building for the Future
What we put in place today builds a solid foundation for the future—but school safety is never a finished plan. As threats and hazards evolve, so must our approach. We remain committed to using every opportunity to learn, improve, and enhance our practices. Just like our students, we never stop learning.
Throughout this process, several key themes will guide our work: increased transparency during emergency situations, deeper collaboration with first responders, expanded training for students, staff, and families, and clearly defined protocols and expectations that support calm, coordinated responses.
