Screening to Care Services

Screening to Care Services

Santee School District has partnered with Fred Finch Youth & Family Services and the County of San Diego - Behavioral Health Services to provide Screening to Care services to our students. Screening to Care is designed to screen students to identify social-emotional needs and provide prevention and early intervention services.

Students will participate in the Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Risk Screener (mySAEBRS), a simple 20 question screening tool aimed to access students’ Social-Emotional skills across three domains: Social Behavior, Academic Behavior, and Emotional Behavior. The screening tool will allow us to identify those students who are well-adjusted, those who might be experiencing struggles, and those who may be at risk for social-emotional behavior (SEB) problems. The questions included in the mySAEBRS are the following:

Social Behavior

  • I argue with others
  • I get along with my peers
  • I lose my temper
  • I disrupt class
  • I am respectful
  • Other people like me
  • I have trouble waiting my turn

Academic Behavior

  • I like school
  • I am ready for class
  • I get good grades
  • I have trouble working alone
  • It’s hard to pay attention in class
  • I participate in class

Emotion Behavior

  • I feel sad
  • I feel nervous
  • I like to try new things
  • I am happy
  • I am worried
  • When something bad happens, it takes me a while to feel better
  • I like being alone

Should your student be identified as needing additional support, they will participate in small group interventions, aimed at helping students develop stronger social-emotional skills and meeting academic and behavior goals. Please note that these are NOT therapy groups. The small groups will consist of 3-8 students and will be held at school, during the school day. Groups will meet 1-2 times per week for 45 minutes. The groups will be facilitated by a trained professional who will work in close collaboration with school counselors, teachers, and administration.

The groups are informational, fun, engaging, and have a positive focus. Group lessons will target topics such as identifying thoughts and feelings, understanding common responses to stress, relaxation techniques and coping strategies, positive thinking, positive decision making, problem solving, self-regulation and management, empathy, and navigating social relationships. The goal is to support your student in feeling good about school, reach their academic potential, and thrive socially and emotionally.

There is no cost to participate in this school resource. We hope that you will take advantage of this great opportunity. Should your student be identified for further supportive services someone from the school or Fred Finch team will contact you.

*For quality assurance and monitoring of the effectiveness of this program, Santee School District will provide the County of San Diego with a report with general results of the mySAEBRS. The report will not include any personal information that can be used to identify your student or service needs.
