Math standards haven't changed but how they are presented instructionally has changed.

This year, our students are learning mathematics through our newly adopted math programs: Amplify Desmos Math in grades K–5 and Imagine Math IM in grades 6–8. Both programs provide opportunities for students to solve meaningful problems, discuss their ideas, learn from one another, and develop a deep understanding of mathematics.

You may notice that math looks a little different from the way many of us learned it. Rather than beginning every lesson with a teacher showing students exactly how to solve a problem, students are often presented with an interesting mathematical situation and asked to notice, wonder, explore, and make sense of it.

This is called problem-based learning. Click on the link to learn more about problem based learning: What Does Problem-Based Learning Look Like in a Classroom?

Students still learn grade level standards, mathematical skills and procedures, but they also learn to think deeply about why mathematics works. They solve problems, share strategies, make connections between ideas, and learn from the thinking of their classmates. The structure of mathematics classes has changed, but not the math itself.

Check out the strategies and games below that you can try with your students at home.
