Continuation of Benefits after Termination
If you have terminated employment with the District and are not eliegble for retiree benefits, you are eligible for COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) continuation benefits for up to 18 months following your termination. Some termination events allow for longer periods of coverage. Please contact the Benefits Technician in HR for specific information.
You will be offered COBRA coverage for the same benefits that you had during employment. For example, if you received medical, dental, and vision coverage during employment, you will be offered all 3 benefits on COBRA. You may elect one, all, or none up to 45 days following your COBRA notification date. From your election date, you then have 60 days to make a payment and bring your account current.
For classified staff and management, you are eligible for COBRA benefits on the first day of the month following your termination date. For example, if you terminate on June 13th, you are eligible beginning July 1st.
For certificated staff, there are two scenarios:
1. If you terminate employment and have worked less than 75% of the school year, you will be eligible for COBRA benefits on the first day of the month following your termination date.
2. If you terminate employment and have worked more than 75% of the school year, your employee benefits will continue through August 31st. You will be eligible for COBRA continuation benefits on September 1st.
Group life insurance is not eligible for COBRA continuation. You will be mailed a packet with information on how to convert the life insurance policy into a personal policy. Rates are determined by The Hartford, and not by the District.
COBRA coverage will be terminated if payment is not made within 30 days of the premium due date.
