Data Backup
Why backup?
Backup is important to do to ensure that you protect content and information that is important to you. Computer hard drives can fail, viruses attack, devices can be lost or stolen, or content can accidently erased or modified. Even when you have data in the cloud you are not "backed up". It is recommended that you have critical data backed up in at least 2 places.
What should I back up?
You should back up any information that you deem important. Imagine that all of your accounts get erased and your "go-to" devices are gone. What data would you miss? How would your ability to do your job be impacted?
Here are some items that we think may be important to you:
- Documents
- Pictures/Video
- Browser Bookmarks
Where Should I back up?
There are quite a few options available to you to store a copy of your data.
Online:

Microsoft OneDrive
- Pros: Online file system available to all employees and integrated with district email services.
- Cons: When your connection to the internet is down, data may not be accessible.
- Instructions:
- Go to https://onedrive.live.com
- Log in with your school district email account
- Use the "Upload" button or Drag and drop files onto your browser

Google Drive
- Pros: Online file system available to most employees.
- Cons: When your connection to the internet is down, data may not be accessible.
- Instructions:
- Go to http://drive.google.com
- Log in with your ssd4kids.net account
- Use the "New" button or Drag and drop files onto your browser
Physical:
On our network:

User home directory
- Pros: Available to all staff members and is backed up by the technology department nightly.
- Cons: Not for personal information and we have a limited amount of available space.
- Instructions:
- PC:
- Open your computer and look for the "U: drive"
- If this is not available, press the windows key and R, then type:
- \\ssd0\home\jdoe (where jdoe is your username)
- Press enter
- Drag and drop files into this window to make a copy on the server.
- Mac:
- In Finder, go to "Go" and then "Connect to Server"
- Type the following in the "Server Address" bar and then press "Connect":
- Smb://ssd0.santee.local/home/jdoe (where jdoe is your username)
- Choose "Connect"
- Select "Registered User" and then enter your network username (ex: [email protected])
- The folder should be available on your desktop
- Drag and drop files into this window to make a copy on the server.
